Intensive, fun workshop for those artists with some experience with oil paint or pastel. We will work on the fundamentals of making a dynamic landscape painting. Through the landscape genre, we will learn how to create more interesting compositions, learn to use “value” to make more powerful paintings, and learn how to use color to make a powerful statement. The class will do several small paintings each day, learning methods of planning your painting, from choosing subject matter, editing and using reference photos. We will work with a set of
guidelines to help you critique your own paintings. There will be lots of hands-on, individual instruction with demos.

I did this pastel "en plein air", painting on location in the community of Nathrop, a few miles from Salida.

A two-day workshop for pastel, oil, and acrylic painters, exploring ways of making a more dynamic painting. This is a workshop for students with some painting experience.

From choosing your subject to paint, to discovering how to critique your own work, learn how to make your paintings stand out from the crowd wherever you are in your art journey.

Through specific painting exercises, learn to edit and simplify to develop more interesting compositions, learn to use values to your advantage, and make your paintings pop with effective use of color temperature and contrasting color.

Workshop and classes will be held at Art Lofts, in Beaufort, SC. Size will be limited to ensure lots of individual instruction.

I will be teaching Introduction to Pastel classes at Karen's Korner Gallery, in Mt. Pleasant. Monday-Tuesday evening, Feb 7th/8th, from 4-7pm...These will be classes tailored to those who have drawn or painted sometime in the past, and would like to explore the world of pastel.

There will be 2 classes.....the fee is 160. The class size will be small to ensure lots of individual instruction.

Pastel supplies will be available for a fee of $15 for the two classes for those who don't have supplies.

Drawing in Color/ Beginning Pastel

Tuesdays, 5-6:45, September 14th-28th (We will add the fourth class sometime in September)

An introductory 4-session class using various drawing media including charcoal and soft pastel. For beginners or those who want a refresher course, or for students interested in starting pastel. In these classes, students will learn about shading, tone, and creating 3 dimensional images working with still life, the landscape, and portraiture, first with charcoal then with pastel.

Explore the fundamentals of composition, value, and color through the media of pastel.

Portrait Sketches

I am currently painting small pastel and oil portrait sketches, like the ones seen here...some are small, 6"x6, like"Lena", or larger, such as the 12"x12 pastel of "Smiling Girl". Prices start at $250 for a 6x6. I do larger pieces, also if desired.

I can do these from photos, yours or mine, preferably from a photo with strong light source from the side, or backlit, and the face in shadow. I use several photographs and combine the best elements of each. Emailing me your photos would be the quickest and easiest way to proceed, but of course mailing them the old fashioned way works, too.

Sandusky Studios Opening Reception

I am now managing the Sandusky Studios project in Salida, which was conceived in January during the Inaugural Exhibit featuring Jimmy Descants' sculptural installations and my pastels and oils. The building worked out really well for the showing and making of artwork and we had a lot of interest from artists in Salida to make it available for studio/gallery space....so....the partners of Milagro Design, LLC in January, 2009, decided to use the Sandusky as an art incubator for Salida, Colorado. What once was the empty upstairs of the historic building now serves as a space allowing artists to pursue their creative ambitions in an energized community of like-minded spirits. The long hallway with it's room-sized skylight creates a natural gallery space available to artists for exhibitions, movie showings, classrooms, and community art events.

The project is going well...all 10 studio spaces have been rented out, and artists are busy making things, work is being created...there are paintings, and assemblages on display in the gallery, movies will be shown starting this Sunday, March 15th, by Matthew Lyons Clark..
I am teaching workshops and classes in my studio, and we are scheduling events now for the spring and summer.

We had a very well attended opening last Friday night and will be doing this on a regular basis..so keep tuned in for announcements and dates of happenings....

Inaugural Exhibit

he Inaugural Ball Exhibit on Tuesday night drew hundreds of happy citizens to the Sandusky building to celebrate Barack Obama's inauguration. Festivities began early that evening and lasted into the night with happy revelers migrating between various parties around town. Many of the guests wore ball gowns, tuxedos, or other interesting party outfits assembled for this special occasion.

The upstairs of the Sandusky building was transformed into an exciting art venue, with rooms filled with Jimmy Descant's assemblages, Susan Mayfield's paintings, a video room put together by Matthew Clark who ran an endless loop of President Obama's Inauguration, and wonderful food artfully displayed and generously donated by Michelle Gapp. The positive energy flowed throughout the evening, and the combination of art, food, music, and the promise of a new era created an electric atmosphere of goodwill and fun for all..

Inauguration Exhibit with Rocketman

I am truly excited to be a part of Jimmy Descant's exhibit that will be held during President Obama's Inauguration. Jimmy is an artist nationally known for his sculptural "rockets", among other art objects he meticulously crafts. He has a passionate political voice that is powerfully expressed through his most recent work, sculptural installations that combine iconic, sometimes startling imagery with Jimmy's elegant craftmanship. I will have several paintings hanging alongside as counterpoints to these provocative pieces. Details below:

These were taken from in and around Salida, Lost Lake near Cottonwood Pass, Mesa Verde National Park, the Rico and Telluride areas, and Black Canyon of the Gunnison.

The aspen was in its full fall glory and there had been 3 inches of snow on the San Juan Mountains, and it was one of the more breathtaking scenes I had ever witnessed. Some of the photos were taken out of the car window, (passenger side) as you can probably tell.

Salida Show at the Steam Plant!!

On a cold and rainy Saturday night, a festive crowd showed up for my opening of new Salida paintings at the Steam Plant. Amazing food by Tyler and Celebrations, and the Steam Plant staff was great. Thanks to my sweet Lee and everyone who helped pull this together. I appreciate all the local support too; thanks to everyone showing up in the pouring rain....

The show will be up through the month of October, for those who missed the opening.

Susan Mayfield is an artist well known for her use of color and light in her pastel and oil landscapes. A native of Charleston, SC, she and her husband, Lee Hunnicutt, currently divide their time between the Lowcountry of South Carolina, and Salida, Colorado, finding inspiration in the natural beauty of both environments.

After graduating with honors in Fine Arts from the College of Charleston, in South Carolina, Mayfield continued her studies with many prominent contemporary artists. Her career has included solo and group exhibits in galleries such as the Wells Gallery, in Charleston, SC, the Joyce Robins Gallery in Santa Fe, NM, The Red Piano Gallery in Hilton Head, SC, the Gibbes Museum of Art, among many others. Her work is found in corporate and private collections, and her paintings have been exhibited internationally in the Art in the Embassies program. In addition to creating artwork, she teaches pastel and landscape painting workshops around the country, and ongoing classes in Salida and Charleston.

Mayfield takes frequent painting excursions to places that provide her inspiration, such as the high mountain deserts of New Mexico, the clear springs and cypress swamps of Florida, and recently to Thailand and Vietnam. Her work has focused on life near the water, from the sea islands of Georgia to the cypress swamps and black water creeks of her native South Carolina, to the white-water rivers of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mayfield has explored the wetlands and the people who live there through paint and pastel. She has felt a sense of purpose to record and depict the way of life that exists on the rivers, creeks, and ocean; a way of life that has disappeared at a furious pace through development and natural causes.

She shows the same sensibility in her recent paintings from her new Colorado surroundings. The back alleys of Salida, the dramatic seasonal changes, the monumental beauty of the mountains against the big Colorado sky, provide constant inspiration to this artist. The dynamic, ever-changing Arkansas River is of particular interest as subject matter, from the raging early summer whitewater to the quiet flow through snow-covered banks in the winter.
